Where?
83 Boundary Street, West End
The sidewalk was crowded as we weaved through West End on a Saturday morning to get to The Establishment; easily identifiable by the shiny red scooter parked in the doorway. I’d visited with family once before and remembered that they did amazing avocado toast. We were lucky to snag the last table, outside on the street.
The Establishment is an Italian cafe and restaurant (I’ve heard incredible things about their housemade gnocchi) but they have an extensive breakfast menu as well. And it is GOOD. They cater for vegans and have gluten free options, too!
We ordered coffee and flicked through the menus. The cafe was packed to the rafters so the coffee was gone by the time we got our food, but we watched people on the street and chatted and the time passed quickly. The coffee is amazing, from The Establishment Coffee Company – a local boutique roaster in Brisbane.
My avocado on toast (with sides of haloumi and potato cakes, because why not?) was to die for. The avos were perfectly ripe and the potato cakes were delicious – I was expecting hash browns but they were more like herby potato rissoles. Yum.
Mamma’s big breakfast was reported delicious as well – housemade baked beans, double-smoked bacon and Italian sausages. I was eyeing off Nonna’s vegie breakfast too – maybe next time!
