For the first time, Savoyards Musical Comedy Society is producing Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Brothers Grimm inspired musical, Into the Woods.

The story follows The Baker and his wife who wish to have a child, Cinderella who wishes to go to the King’s Festival, and Jack who wishes his cow would give some milk. The Baker and his wife are visited by the Witch next door, who reveals to them that she placed a curse on their family. They set off on a journey into the woods to reverse the curse. In the woods, we also meet Little Red, who is trying to visit her grandmother, the Wolf with an insatiable appetite, Rapunzel lonely and locked in a tower, and two handsome Princes chasing love and adventure. By the end of Act I, everyone has gotten their wish and dreams of living happily ever after. But in Act 2, when Jack’s beanstalk brings them a visit from an angry Giant, we see how the consequences of their actions haunt them in disastrous ways. The community must come together to save each other and their kingdom, but sacrifices must be made.

Matthew Semple will be the Musical Director of this productions, and regular Savoyards performer Vanessa Wainwright is swapping the stage for the Director’s seat. “Into the Woods is one of my favourite musicals and it is so exciting to be part of bringing this production to the Savoyards community,” Ms Wainwright said. “I have loved this show for so long that I jumped at the chance to be able to direct this show for Savoyards @ The Star.”

Savoyards @ The Star is an initiative that has been developed to provide opportunities for the public and Savoyards Alumni to broaden their skills and knowledge in theatrical production by welcoming them to be part of the production team. This includes experience in directing, choreographing, musical direction, lighting, prop design, set design, sound design, stage management, costuming and the like with the support of our expert Savoyards production teams.

Featuring a cast of 17 fabulous Brisbane performers – including Warryn James as the Narrator, Andrew Dark as the Baker, Astin Hammermeister as the Baker’s Wife and Jacqui Cuny as The Witch – this musical will take you on a magical journey Into The Woods, performed in the intimate Star Theatre in the beautiful Brisbane bayside.
