When? Saturday, August 4, 2018
Where? QPAC’s Concert Hall, South Bank
Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s Music Director, Alondra de la Parra will return to conduct her first Maestro series concert of the year, Soloists and Spontaneity, leading QSO with Artist in Residence Sergio Tiempo on the piano.
Stravinsky’s Dumbarton Oaks kicks off proceedings and recalls Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos in its bustling themes, but its shifting metres, syncopation and sever tonality is unmistakably Stravinsky. Then, Rachmaninov’s third piano concerto, composed in 1909, electrifies with its complex piano work and romantic melodies – Martha Agerich taught Sergio Tiempo to rehearse multiple interpretations of this piece, and this inbuilt flexibility promises to ignite his performance with heart-in-mouth spontaneity. Finally, Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra does exactly what its name suggests and gives the whole orchestra a chance to shine, spotlighting orchestral sections, duos and individuals for a pacy finish. All of the orchestral players can be glimpsed as soloists in these winning works.
Ticketing and further information about Soloists and Spontaneity is available on the QSO website.
The Rachmaninov Concerto and Bartok Concerto will also be performed for Morning Masterworks concert on Friday, August 3 – ticketing and further information is here.
