Backstreet Christmas Day 3: Sewing & Craft

38fe8-122Bdays2Bof2Bxmas1

We were fortunate growing up to have a mum who spent a lot of time crafting with us – from the scrapbooking craze that saw our photo boxes looking a little serial-killer-y as we cut out faces for our projects, to sewing (and resewing) clothes and learning embroidery and glue and glitter of every kind. As an adult, I jumped on the yarn train as well – crochet, mostly, I’ve not yet mastered knitting! If you’re looking for a gift for the crafty people in your life, start with these locally owned businesses!

The Yarn Bowl

254 St Vincents Road, Banyo

A boutique yarn store that strives to source quality, hard-to-find yarns and notions. The Yarn Bowl aims to offer both locally and internationally sourced yarns and notions that will inspire and energise your creativity.

Peppermint Stitches

133 Sylvan Road, Toowong

A friendly craft store located in a bright little building in Toowong, specializing in patchwork and quilting, cross stitch supplies, and sewing machines and overlockers, and wool. Peppermint Stitches carries a wide range of contemporary and reproduction fabrics, cross stitch designs, hand-dyed threads and fabrics, needles, patterns, stranded and perle cottons…the list goes on! You can also shop online through their web store.

Peppermint Stitches also offer the full range of Sewing Machines within the Bernina and Janome ranges, and stock a range of accessories.

Sadly, Peppermint Stitches will close its doors on 29 November 2025, after 17 years, so this is your last chance (and there are plenty of “closing down” bargains on offer).

Art Shed Brisbane

274 Montague Road, West End

Art Shed Brisbane has a huge range of craft materials including adhesives, paper and card, general craft materials, glass paint and mediums, gilding and special effects gear, moulding supplies, feathers, felt, polystyrene shapes, timber craft and more. Meg and Manny met at Art Shed Brisbane in 2003, bought the store in 2007, and married in 2008. They set out to make Art Shed Brisbane a store for art lovers, bursting with art materials at fair prices and sharing their passion and inspiring the creative spirit in every visitor.

A family owned and run business since 1978, Make It Hobby ‘n’ Craft have one of Australia’s largest range of licensed, rare, spectacular and hard-to-find patchwork fabric, including Marvel, DC Comics, Star Wars, Star Trek, Disney, Dr Who, Tula Pink, Kaffe Fassett and Harry Potter. They specialise in needlework and craft supplies as well as classes and stock a large range of unusual and quirky patchwork fabrics, sewing patterns, sewing supplies as well as craft and embroidery materials.
