4 March 2025

QLD Conservatorium Theatre, South Bank

Experience a feast of creativity as Melbourne-based Indigenous singer-songwriter Jess Hitchcock joins forces with the award-winning Penny Quartet for a five-city national tour, presented in association with the Adelaide Festival and Perth Festival. Musica Viva Australia is thrilled to present 11 newly commissioned arrangements of Hitchcock’s best-known songs by 11 of Australia’s finest composers as a highlight of the tour.

“Jess Hitchcock is a vital part of Australian culture, and in 2024 I wanted to celebrate her artistry through a collaboration with the Penny Quartet and Australia’s finest composers,” said Artistic Director Paul Kildea. “The composers were invited to bring their own language and aesthetic to the task or stay very much in Jess’s world. The results are heartfelt, exquisite, and deeply touching.”

Hailed as a ‘vocal chameleon’ (Glam Adelaide), Jess Hitchcock is an opera singer, a singer-
songwriter, a writer, a composer and a storyteller whose versatile voice can make itself at home in a studio, on a stage, or in a football stadium. In 2025, Hitchcock will tour with legendary Australian singer-songwriter, and long-term collaborator, Paul Kelly. The pair performed and recorded Kelly’s hit, ‘Everyday My Mother’s Voice’, in 2019 earning standing ovations across the nation.

Founded in 2014, the Penny Quartet are one of Australia’s leading string ensembles with an insatiable appetite for the new. Nominees for the Freedman Fellowship award and winners of the Australian National Academy of Music Chamber Music Competition in their inaugural year, the quartet have gone on to hold residences at the Four Winds Festival and Canberra International Music Festival.
