Beginning
13 – 29 July 2023
PIP Theatre, Park Road, Milton
Set in the aftermath of Laura’s housewarming party at her new flat in London, Danny, having attended simply as the plus one of a friend, is the last remaining guest. Laura (Crystal Arons) is 38, single, childless and with no immediate family; Danny (Jesse Blachut) is 42, divorced, living with his mother and has not seen his daughter for a number of years. Over a few more beverages and boogies, the pair try to navigate their vulnerabilities, overcome their fears and end their loneliness. Can they be brave, take a risk, and find the partnership they have been longing for?
Written by David Eldridge, Beginning runs in real-time with no interval, and was first performed at London’s National Theatre in 2017 before transferring to the West End. This production by new Brisbane-based theatre company Moonspark Productions, directed by Heidi Gledhill, marks the Australian premiere of Beginning.
“I feel as though the play was practically jumping off the page in alignment with not only my dating experiences and mishaps, but also those of my friends,” said Crystal Arons, who is also Artistic Director and founder of Moonspark Productions. “The play explores the rollercoaster that is modern dating through two complex and very relatable characters”.
