25 March 2023

Roma Street Parklands, Brisbane City

Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) will present a free, hour-long outdoor concert at the Roma Street Parklands this March, featuring the full symphony orchestra on stage led by renowned conductor Richard Davis, performing well known and loved classical repertoire.

QSO Chief Executive Yarmila Alfonzetti said the event is a reflection of the Orchestra’s commitment to give the gift of music to the city. “Queensland Symphony Orchestra is a wonderful cultural asset of this state, and importantly it is accessible. We belong to all Queenslanders, and we are thrilled to be able to share the gift of music through this live, free outdoor event. This is the beginning of what will be an annual outdoor orchestral concert, and we invite you, your family and your friends to enjoy!” she said.

The program is set to open with the thunderous and well-known Fanfare for the Common Man by Copland, followed by Tower’s Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman. Written in 1942 by the American composer, Fanfare is highly emotive and was played at the Los Angeles Airport as the space shuttle Endeavor touched down after its final flight on September 21, 2012. Joan Tower’s Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman was inspired by Copland’s Common Man and dedicated to women who are adventurous and take risks.

As the night unfolds, the audience will be taken on a musical journey through different ages, from Dvořák’s lively Carnival Overture to Delius’s serene Summer Evening. The performance continues with the intricate Symphonic Minutes by Dohnányi and the exuberant Capriccio Italien by Tchaikovsky. The concert will conclude with Glinka’s thrilling Overture to Ruslan and Lyudmila.

Symphony Under the Stars is free, but registration is encouraged. This outdoor event is open to all ages and offers a chance to witness the Queensland Symphony Orchestra play in a relaxed and picturesque setting, whether you are a devoted fan of the orchestra or a first-time attendee. Bring your picnic basket or grab some food onsite, and enjoy a night of exquisite music in the beautiful Roma Street Parklands.
