Pop the champers, practice your speech and prepare to catch the bouquet at Phoenix Ensemble’s latest musical production – the musical comedy It Shoulda Been You, produced entirely by local talent and featuring 17 South East Queensland performers.

The bride is Jewish. The groom is Catholic. Her mother is a force of nature. His mother is a tempest in a cocktail shaker. And, when the bride’s ex-boyfriend crashes the party, the perfect wedding starts to unravel and it’s up to the sister of the bride to turn a tangled mess into happily ever after. It Shoulda Been You made its Broadway premiere in 2015 and has been regarded as a hilarious yet poignant musical for the whole family, where chaos reigns and love blossoms in mysterious places.

Director Sherryl-Lee Secomb said that It Shoulda Been You has a universal story about owning who you are and who you want to be in life.

“The relationships between the characters are so truthfully explored that there is something for everyone,” Ms Secomb said. “What attracted me to this show is a song called A Little Bit Less Than where a character called Rebecca comes out to her family. My favourite line is, ‘…if they don’t ask and I don’t tell they miss the best of me’. The text of this song is for everybody in all situations, and I think that’s how special this show is. Yes, it is Rebecca’s story, but it is all our stories,” she said.

It Shoulda Been You is such a rarely performed musical and it’s liberating to have new musical theatre in Queensland,” Ms Secomb added. “The passion the cast and creatives have for this new and exciting show is infectious and we can’t wait for audiences to be introduced to and to fall in love with this new work just as we have.”
