Death and the Maiden
19 November – 4 December
Ad Astra, 57 Misterton St, Fortitude Valley
Ad Astra’s final production for 2021 is the chilling Death and the Maiden, written by Ariel Dorfman and directed by Jacqueline Kerr.
Set in Latin America, the story centres on Paulina Salas (played by Sandra Harman), a woman whose horrific kidnapping, torture, and rape at the hands of government officials comes back to haunt all three characters. Her husband is Gerardo Escobar (played by Gary Farmer-Trickett), a lawyer who has just been appointed to a commission charged with investigating murders carried out by the previous dictator’s regime. Rounding out the cast is Tom Coyle playing Dr Roberto Miranda, an enigmatic and mysterious man whom Paulina believes to be her torturer, though his guilt is somewhat ambiguous.
This is not a play for the faint of heart. Exploring themes such as trauma, memory, justice, freedom, female empowerment and forgiveness, the audience will be taken on a tense journey which will hold a mirror to us all and grapple with these difficult themes. The play is recommended for mature audiences and contains coarse language, adult themes, sexual references and strobe light effects.
