These past few months have rocketed past, but I still managed to attend a ten year reunion...not mine, but The Reunion, performed by @minerva.theatreco at @blutesbar in the Valley as part of @anywherefest 💚💙

Presented by indelabilityarts in collaboration with The Good Room and PIP Theatre at Metro Arts, SHE was a confronting and affecting sharing of women’s stories, with a focus on mental health and mental illness.

With @ann13grace last Thursday night for the world premiere of The Poison of Polygamy. La Boite's 2023 season opener is a sprawling family saga, playing out across years and continents, from the opium dens of Qing China to the Victorian goldfields and the early days of Melbourne’s Chinatown.

This week is your last chance to see Damien Ryan's raucous adaptation of As You Like It at @qld_theatre 🎭 it's a wonderfully absurd and highly entertaining adaptation of Shakespeare's comedy: come for the famous "all the world's a stage" monologue, stay for the goat-related chaos 🐐💃 Playing at the Bille Brown Theatre until this Saturday, 13 May.

At the opening night of @thexcollectiveoz Venus in Fur a couple of weeks ago with @bonniemaryliston. Tonight is your last chance to experience this electric and engrossing production about power, fantasy, and desire - Nick Sinclair and AJ are exceptional, and each performance also includes the fabulous vocals of Laura Fois @laura.fois_performer before the show. Post-show ritual with @hkfuller ☕🥂 my belated review of Camerata's opening concert of 2023, Heartstrings, is online now - it was a stirring program of pieces for strings, performed with all of the passion and character that these works evoked.

Mid-smile but honestly having an excellent time at the opening night of As You Like It last night at Queensland Theatre. Damien Ryan's adaptation of Shakespeare's pastoral romantic comedy is highly entertaining and increasingly absurd, leaning into slapstick and silliness even as it speaks to the big themes of identity, love, nature and redemption. Plus, there's new original music by Alec Steedman, plenty of laughs, and chaotic good times - it's one of those perfectly FUN nights out at the theatre. Always worth committing a Julius margarita-and-Aperol combo to the grid 🍕🍹my belated review of Queensland Symphony Orchestra's first Maestro concert of 2023, and their first with Umberto Clerici officially at the helm as Chief Conductor, is online now. Bringing together a staple of the classical canon with distinguished and new Australian compositions, QSO's Ode to Joy set the tone for a year of ambitious and varied musical experiences 👏

Ryan Enniss' coming of age play about a young autistic man, Drizzle Boy, is playing at Queensland Theatre for one more week. This is a joyful, visceral, and affecting piece of theatre with beautifully integrated technical elements - I laughed, cried, and gasped on opening night last Thursday.

First show of 2023! Last Thursday we attended the opening night of Family Values, Queensland Theatre (@qld_theatre)'s 2023 season opener. A family drama unfolding at a 70th birthday party, it seeks to capture the state of the nation, holding up a mirror to family dinner tables (not to mention social media comment sections) around Australia and asking whether we really act on the values we espouse.

A few stats, for fun, as I close the book on 2022.

2022 in programmes 💜❤💚💛🧡💙 I'm returning to the online world after an unintended, but refreshing, month away. The new year is well underway, but I'm squeezing in last year's wrap-up first.

This month, Queensland Shakespeare Ensemble performed Macbeth for the first time in the company’s 21-year history, presented in the intimate performance space at the Fringe Brisbane Hub in South Brisbane.

We attended the final performance of White Rabbit, Red Rabbit in late October, presented by @thexcollectiveoz, and saw Amanda McErlean and Terry Hansen each tackle this experimental work by Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour, having never read the script or seen the play before they stepped onstage to perform it. White Rabbit, Red Rabbit explored themes of obedience, authority, and social conditioning, among other things, and was an engaging piece of avant-garde theatre (even if I did just about die of stage fright during audience participation). Last Saturday afternoon @hkfuller and I attended the launch of Southern Cross Soloists (SXS)'s 2023 Concert Series at the @judithwrightcentre. Artistic Director Tania Frazer announced three concerts for next year, inspired by travel and journeying through Paris, Central Europe, and the Americas. We also heard a few pieces performed from the upcoming programme, which will showcase the SXS artists alongside national and international guest artists. SXS have also announced a new Sunset Soiree Recital Series for Brisbane and the Gold Coast, and tickets are now on sale for all 2023 concerts.

Last night we attended the world premiere of First Casualty at the Bille Brown Theatre: a debut play by Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Johnston, a serving soldier and veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan. Closing @qld_theatre 's 2022 season, it's a high-adrenaline drama following four Australian soldiers stationed at a remote outpost in 2011 Afghanistan over 48 hours. The staging is excellent, a work of impressive scale unfolding on the corner stage thanks to innovative and well-integrated design elements, and it's a story I haven't seen onstage, told from a unique perspective that invites empathy but also raises questions for the Australian public about our nation’s military involvement in Afghanistan.

'Tis the season 💜🌸🌿 doesn't get much more Brisbane than ibises (ibii?) nesting in the jacaranda trees.

At Metro Arts with @ann13grace on Friday night for the world premiere of BUNKER, a high-intensity dance theatre work co-created by choreographer Lisa Wilson and video designer Nathan Sibthorpe.

Backstreet Brisbane was founded and continues on the unceded land and waterways of the Jagera and Turrbal people.

I acknowledge and pay respect to the traditional custodians of the land where I live and work, to their Elders past and present, and to all First Nations peoples.
