At opening night of Queensland Theatre's Taming of the Shrew last Thursday ✨ this production had plenty of laughs, and interesting adaptations of space and time, but the promise to "rescue this classic love story from the clutches of controversy" was left, disappointingly, unfulfilled with the original script's mistreatment of women, especially Katharina, still firmly in place. I'm seeing my first shows of @anywherefest 2021 tonight! Unfortunately I'm out of town for part of the festival this year, but I'm squeezing 10 shows into the next week or so - keep your eyes peeled for plenty of reviews and recommendations incoming! 💙💚

Queensland Symphony Orchestra transported its audience from concert hall to art gallery with Pictures at an Exhibition: Musical Vignettes on Saturday night. In addition to the evocative titular work by Modest Mussorgsky, audiences witnessed an exciting world premiere and a wonderful opportunity to admire the work of individual QSO soloists whose virtuosity may not always be visible among the strength of the cohesive and coordinated orchestra 🎶 read my full review of the concert on the blog now. “I think you will walk into that theatre and you will step back into a Brisbane that so many of us remember and are so fond of – we’re talking Billabongs in summer melting across your hand, and there’s cans of ice cold Pasito, and Joh Bjelke-Petersen’s the Premier and it’s just that sweltering summer and everyone’s shirtless and Brisbane is on fire, you know? To step back into that world, and then step back into the wonder of this kid…I mean, I just think that’s so exciting.”

With @hkfuller at the launch of AVÉ, the @australianvocalensemble last Saturday night - a gorgeous 80-minute acapella concert, including the world premiere of an array of new works inspired by the poetry of Brisbane writer David Malouf. I don’t have any kind of technical background in music or voice, but you don’t need one to be able to feel the tingling in your spine or the goosebumps on your arms hearing this music, these voices – haunting, soothing, uplifting, glorious. The works were obviously technically challenging, but smoothly and beautifully performed ✨

A fabulous Saturday night soaking in the glorious voices of new acapella quartet the @australianvocalensemble followed by baked camembert and truffle arancini 😍😍 in excellent company with @hkfuller 💕 AVÉ launched with a gorgeous 80-minute concert featuring Artistic Director Katie Noonan, Fiona Campbell, Andrew Goodwin, and Andrew O'Connor. The evening brought together the old and the new, including pieces by Bach, Handel, and the world premiere of new works inspired by the poetry of Brisbane writer David Malouf. Happy Easter Sunday, friends, if you celebrate it, or if you choose to indulge in the food of it, or if you are just enjoying the extra long weekend ❤ Last Easter, I didn't make hot cross buns because it was that panic-buying, bread-crazy phase of our first lockdown and there was not a sachet of dried yeast to be found in Brisbane. Glad that I could resume this little personal tradition for 2021 (plus I made some super indulgent Caramilk Easter egg slice!) 🍫☕

Even in person it doesn't quite look real! ✨ It was a beautiful bright day in the city today, and I spent a few hours wandering through the Curiocities across Brisbane City and South Bank, as today was their last day - I stood inside the world's largest acoustic guitar, and a giant mirrored tower, enjoyed the surreal delights of these giant bubbles, and more. Some of the works seemed like they'd be more effective at night, so if you've got a free evening tonight is your last chance to check them out! ✨

I got some jars of goodness delivered by @stoneandlea so obviously the first and only thing to do was make scones for afternoon tea. If you haven't already tried the jams, chutneys, curds, and other preserves from Rosanne at Stone and Lea, I'd highly recommend it - locally made with locally sourced ingredients, the richness of this strawberry and lavender jam is unparalleled, a much fuller flavour than anything I've ever bought from supermarkets 🍓🍓 I've got a jar of lemon curd waiting in the fridge too, so there will be more scones to come🍋🍋

After a year on hold due to COVID-19, Triple X finally opened at @qld_theatre last Thursday night and it is a brilliant, raunchy romantic comedy tackling big ideas, themes, and power structures. I was still buzzing with energy after leaving the theatre, after the drive home, after making a cup of coffee to sit down and dump out my thoughts and wrangle them into a review. This feels like one of those works that will soak into me slowly - where I will remember something, or something will click, and I’ll be awed anew by a moment of cleverness or comedy or wit. This is the very best kind of theatre, the works you chew on for days or weeks afterwards.

Bigger & Blacker opened last night at @laboitetheatre ! Grab yourself a Fabaret cocktail (they are as tasty as they are pretty) and see the fabulous Steven Oliver further cement himself as a man of a million talents - song, dance, music, comedy, storytelling - in this whirlwind cabaret based on his own life. It is hysterically funny and irreverent, as expected, but also filled with moments of vulnerability, reflection, and sincere emotion. And great music, of course. Go, feel, learn, shimmy! Directed and designed by Michael Beh, this metatheatrical dramatic comedy is an ambitious work bursting with colour, glamour, and rage as it sets out to tackle ideas of feminism, abolition, monarchy, patriotism, and revolution 💃🗡👸🎤playing at Christ Church in Milton until March 26.

Last night we were delighted to be at opening night of @thecuratorsbrisbane The Revolutionists. Big catwalk energy, lush costuming, bursts of song...a delicious performance of metatheatrical comedy juggling ideas of feminism, patriotism, and abolition, set under the shadow of the guillotine in revolutionary France and performed with striking, stirring passion by its skillful cast of four. The 'I Do! Wedding Stories fron Queensland' exhibition at @qldmuseum closes after this weekend - we really enjoyed wandering through (and ended up leaving right on closing) last Friday. It doesn't seem huge at a glance, but there is so much interesting detail to take in, from the artefacts and outfits as well as the written and spoken stories and the photographs...from forced marriages at Yarrabah mission to the first civil celebrant and drive-thru COVID-19 weddings in 2020, the exhibition spans more than 180 years of trends and traditions, events and evolutions in Queensland weddings and marriages. I'd definitely recommend it if you've got a few spare hours this weekend 💖

@laboitetheatre have kicked off their 2021 season with Naked & Screaming, a rapid-fire rollercoaster that seeks to explore the fear and uncertainty of new parenthood and to comment on the gendered aspects of physical and mental labour in parenting and domestic relationships more broadly. My full review is online now at @limelightmagazine and Naked & Screaming is playing at the Roundhouse Theatre until February 27, brilliantly performed by Emily Burton and Jackson McGovern 👶
