Mitchell Fine Art Gallery, Fortitude Valley

The unfiltered realities of an upbringing in public housing in Woodridge form the basis for Logan artist Jake Moss’s debut exhibition.

Presented as a film production timeline – spanning painting, sculpture, installation, video, and sound – Moss’s exhibition unfolds as an autobiographical narrative of his childhood experience deeply influenced by scarcity, homelessness and fracture.

Jake Moss was born in 1994 and draws inspiration from his childhood in a low socioeconomic multicultural area, whilst being exposed to a kaleidoscope of characters including hard-drug users, bikies, sex workers and church- goers. At first glance, the artworks are vibrant, inviting, and comical. On closer inspection, they reveal the intimate and unfiltered realities of an unconventional upbringing, focusing on home, belonging, nostalgia, identity, and youth.

Hollywoodridge resists expectation and stereotype. It is not about where I come from as an idea, but about treating that life with the seriousness, scale, and care usually reserved for cinema,” says Moss.

The exhibition draws on the mythology of Hollywood, a place Moss felt profoundly distant from in childhood, yet one that symbolised escape, possibility, and transformation, collapsing the distance between glamour and reality and weaving them into a narrative of creative ambition.

Hollywoodridge positions autobiography not as a confession, but as a production. It is a carefully constructed, defiantly ambitious work that reframes origin stories as sites of creative power rather than limitation,” says Gallery Director Mike Mitchell.

A free Artist Talk will be held on Saturday 21 March from 11am, as Jake delves deep into the inspiration of his artistic practice.
