Accidental Death of an Anarchist

A lone maniac turns the Queensland police upside down in this riotous, razor-sharp adaptation of Nobel Prize-winner Dario Fo’s classic political farce, Accidental Death of an Anarchist. This version has been adapted by Helen Strube and PIP Theatre, based on the translation by Ed Emery, and brings biting humour, sharp political commentary, and a healthy dose of local relevance to the stage.

After a young anarchist plummets from a fourth-storey police station window, authorities scramble to rewrite the truth. Initially ruled “an accident, ” then “a suicide” the official narrative crumbles. Enter the Maniac, certified insane, wildly charismatic, and arrested for impersonation. Once inside the station, he launches a theatrical interrogation of his own, impersonating judges, bishops, and forensic experts to expose systemic corruption and spin the entire force into chaos.

This bold new staging, set in 1980s Brisbane during the explosive Fitzgerald Inquiry, places Queensland’s own turbulent political history under the microscope, through the lens of Dario Fo’s wildly absurdist humour.️
