What’s On: The Dead Devils of Cockle Creek (Cut & Run Productions)

The Dead Devils of Cockle Creek

9 – 12 July 2025

PIP Theatre, Milton

The road to hell is paved with good intentions, right? This uniquely Australian story proves the apocalypse can be funny, until it’s not.

Set deep in the wilds of Tasmania, in an isolated ranger’s shack, The Dead Devils of Cockle Creek is a combustible mix of cabin fever and ecological dread. When the isolated worlds of zoologist Dr. Georgina Templeton and Ranger Harris are rocked by two uninvited guests, the stage is set for a collision of ideologies, tempers, and secrets that can no longer stay buried.

Playwright Kathryn Marquet combines her signature blistering wit and chilling social insight in this fast-paced microcosm of Australian politics. Her work confronts the hypocrisy, paralysis, and denial that threatens both the planet and the people fighting to save it — all through a lens that is as irreverent as it is unflinching.

Director Darcy Jones brings this tense, unpredictable play to life with a dynamic local cast, including Michaela Faux, Matthew Filkins, Jett Robson and Malika Savory, that will keep audiences laughing — and squirming — in equal measure. With the costumes, props and set made of 100% recycled materials, this production isn’t afraid to practice what it preaches by creating a bold atmosphere from pre-loved procurements.

The Dead Devils of Cockle Creek is a howl of laughter and rage heard from the wild edges of the world, capturing the zeitgeist with striking accuracy and deftly mixing comedy, commentary, and a damn good fist fight in a raucous exploration of right, wrong, and whatever lies in between.
