Blushing
19 – 29 June 2025
Holy Trinity Church, Fortitude Valley
An exploration of human touch and intimacy, Blushing is an innovative physical theatre work directed by Indiah Morris with Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre. After an original sold-out 2024 In The Raw Studio Season in the same venue, Blushing returns with a revamped cast of 8 performers, bringing fresh energy and emotional resonance to the piece.
In a post-pandemic world where we are increasingly disconnected by technology, Blushing offers a vital reminder of the power and necessity of physical connection. The work blends movement-based storytelling, Butoh-inspired dance, and absurd design elements to explore the complex and evolving relationship humanity has with touch. It examines the dance between shame and curiosity that surrounds physical intimacy, shedding light on the silent struggles of navigating touch in a post-pandemic world. The production interrogates boundaries of intimacy, the radical act of connection, and the unspoken rules that shape our bodies’ responses.

A standout feature of this season is the accompanying workshop series, which will offer a hands-on opportunity to engage with the creative process. Participants will delve into physical theatre techniques, movement exploration, and costume work. The workshops are designed to foster creative expression and a deeper understanding of the themes of Blushing, providing a powerful experience for all involved.
Artistic Director, Indiah Morris shares: “Blushing is an investigation into the experiences, influences, media, moments, and mistakes that shape our understanding of touch. After a global pandemic where we all had no choice but to see touch in a new – somewhat dangerous – way, each high-five carried a new meaning. These heightened stakes for physical connection invited the original Blushing creative team and I to look at touch with a fresh, critical lens. What are these unspoken rules about physical intimacy? When do we learn which touch is and isn’t ‘okay’? Who decides which touch is for public and for private? Who do we mirror to build these boundaries? From here, Blushing was born.”
