Sunshine Coast-based D.I.V.E. Theatre Collective invites audiences to experience Identity — a new production that speaks to the heart of what it means to belong, to be seen, and to connect with others across cultures, languages, and lived experience.
D.I.V.E. Theatre Collective blends physical performance, poetic imagery, and multilingual storytelling to create immersive works that move audiences and challenge traditional theatre boundaries. Identity is an evocative new work offering a deeply human exploration of how we come to understand who we are—through memory, culture, relationships, and the roles imposed or embraced throughout life.
At its core, Identity follows four strangers whose inner worlds unravel inside an otherworldly space where time fractures and reality bends. As they search for belonging, meaning, and connection, the performance becomes a mirror—inviting each audience member to reflect on their own personal journey and the shared threads that bind us all.
In line with D.I.V.E.’s mission to dissolve artistic and social barriers, Identity is performed without a traditional stage or seating. Audiences are free to move throughout the space, encountering the performance up close, face to face with the performers. This unique format invites full immersion, transforming spectators into active participants in the story.
Devised by a culturally diverse ensemble from Australia, Colombia, China, Brazil and Ireland, the show is performed in English, Mandarin, and Spanish but transcends words. Through striking movement, visual poetry, and a mesmerizing soundscape, the performance speaks directly to the senses and emotions, making it accessible to all, regardless of language.
“Our goal has always been to create theatre that opens space for reflection, transformation, and connection,” says director and co-founder Cesar Genaro. “Identity isn’t something you sit back and watch. It’s something you step into, something you feel. Each person experiences it differently, and that’s what makes it so powerful.”
D.I.V.E. Theatre Collective is proud to bring this new work to audiences across Southeast Queensland. In a time when empathy, understanding, and human connection are more vital than ever, Identity offers a space to pause, breathe, and witness the beauty and complexity of being human, together.
