Little Women
2 – 24 May 2025
Pavilion Theatre, Beenleigh Showgrounds, James Street, Beenleigh
For their second show of 2025, Phoenix Ensemble present Louisa May Alcott’s beloved story of the adventures of the four March sisters, Little Women, brought to vivid musical life with book by Allan Knee, music by Jason Howland, and lyrics by Mindi Dickstein.
The Civil War is in full swing, and the March sisters — Meg, the oldest and a romantic, the spirited and tomboyish Jo, sweet and loving Beth, and irascible, playful Amy — live in Concord, Massachusetts with their Marmee while their father is on the battlefield. Filled with adventure (both lived and imagined), heartbreak, and a deep sense of hope, the struggle of these “Little Women” to find their own voices mirrors the growing pains of a young America. With buoyant, joyful melodies, memorable characters, and a big-hearted message, Little Women reminds us that “sometimes when you dream, your dreams come true.”
“Little Women is about sisterhood – the bonds of deepest friendship that can withstand any storm. Sisterhood is not bound by familial ties or gender, but rather an attitude of spirit that claims one another in loyalty and love forever,” says the director, Tammy Sarah Linde. “Whilst staying true to the period in which the story is set, this production aims to bring a modern relevance to the portrayal of these characters through personification of human traits we acknowledge more readily in our society today.”
Little Women features a cast of 10 performers that have come together from across South-East Queensland to perform this show, as well as a large backstage crew of 16 and an orchestra of 14 musicians. Phoenix Ensemble has a proud history of creating high-quality, inclusive local theatre in Beenleigh, with and for the community, with a mission to, “empower our community to make art, grow and find belonging”, and, “to create an engaging theatre experience in an intimate space.”
