What’s On: Dylan Sarra exhibition, Embers of Heritage (Mitchell Fine Art)

Embers of Heritage

29 October – 14 December 2024

Mitchell Fine Art Gallery, Fortitude Valley

Mitchell Fine Art in Fortitude Valley Brisbane proudly presents the first solo exhibition of Brisbane artist Dylan Sarra.

Dylan Sarra was born in the Bundaberg region and belongs to the Gooreng Goreng people. Graduating from the Queensland College of Art in 2022, he focuses on exploring identity and place and has used a range of disciplines such as print, digital, paintings and sculpture to make artwork that connects with people and starts conversations about Indigenous history.

In his first exhibition, Sarra invites viewers to explore the deep connection between fire and First Nations culture, as experienced by the artist. Sarra’s exploration of fire underscores its role in shaping identity and community, celebrating the resilience and ingenuity of First Nations people. In this exhibition viewers are encouraged to reflect on our relationship with fire, heritage and the natural world.

“This exhibition reflects my personal journey and highlights fire as a powerful tool for transformation and renewal” says Sarra. “Each work captures the knowledge of past generations and highlights the importance of preserving cultural traditions.”

It is his aim that people can not only be intrigued by Indigenous culture, but to start to appreciate the role we all play in acknowledging First Nations people. Dylan Sarra is a finalist in this year’s Telstra National Torres Strait Islander Art Awards in Darwin and has been a finalist for the last 3 consecutive years.
