DragSpeare: Drag Kings do Shakespeare

1 – 9 November 2024

PIP Theatre, Milton

Lucinda Shaw, director says “We’ve got an amazing cast of Kings who are not just delivering Shakespeare but doing it with style, sass, and a lot of heart. This is a show for anyone who loves drag, music, and the unexpected.”

DragSpeare follows the Stallion Squad—a group of Drag Kings known for their (fictitious) Queensland cabaret tour—who embark on a quest to prove they’re more than just eye candy. Determined to be taken seriously as Shakespearean actors, the Kings take on iconic roles such as Romeo and Macbeth while infusing the Bard’s scenes with pop music, humour, and a playful, edgy exploration of masculinity.

Anne Pensalfini, co-creator and writer says, “This is a ridiculous good time. We’re merging Shakespeare with the world of drag to show that masculinity—like any performance—is fluid and fun.”

Combining high-energy performances, comedy, and multiple layers of queer, gender-bending fun, DragSpeare delivers a fresh perspective on the classic works of Shakespeare. The show explores performative masculinity, creating an entertaining and thought-provoking cabaret event that engages audiences of all kinds—whether they come for the drag, the comedy or the timeless f*cking poetry.

DragSpeare will star Jules Berry (York Lit), Michelle Lamarca (Rocky V Liquor), Jo Loth (Swingin’ Dick), Anne Pensalfini (Biron Bothways) and Lucinda Shaw (Pan Teasetickle). Each cast member brings a unique background in theatre, music, and cabaret to the production, making for a rich and varied performance.
