AI May

17 – 27 October 2024

PIP Theatre, Milton

AI May is an original bilingual theatre production by Embodi Theatre, and all performances will be surtitled in Traditional Chinese and English. Set in Brisbane 2035, this poignant drama blends futuristic realism, movement, artificial intelligence, and multimedia to explore themes of grief, loneliness, and intergenerational trauma through the eyes of an Asian migrant mother.

Mrs. Chen, a traditional Asian mother, loses her only daughter, May. Overwhelmed with grief, she faces a critical choice: embrace a digital bereavement solution—a humanoid robot resembling May, presented by May’s robotic engineer boyfriend, Jeremy—or find a way to navigate a future without her daughter.

Written by Generation 1.5 Taiwanese-Australian playwright Amy Chien-Yu Wang, AI May draws from personal loss and intergenerational trauma. This captivating new work explores how AI and human relationships intersect as technology increasingly becomes part of everyday life.

Already touching hearts during its early developments, AI May aims to spark conversations on grief, AI technology, interracial tensions, and intergenerational trauma.
