What’s On: Brush and Bow – Art + Music (Riverbend Ensemble)

Brush and Bow – Art + Music

23 – 24 August 2024

Corinda Bowls Club (23 August) and Graceville Uniting Church (24 August)

Riverbend Ensemble, led by violinist Helen Carvolth, will present a unique double-header of string quartet music fused with art. Ms Carvolth was awarded a Creative Sparks Program grant by Brisbane City Council to produce Brush and Bow – Art + Music.

“In a world that has become very visual, pairing live music with art seems like a very logical way to appeal to the way audiences appreciate the arts today,” said Ms Carvolth. Carvolth formed the independent chamber ensemble in July 2022, and since then the group has performed at venues across Brisbane, and in Toowoomba and Maleny.

Brush and Bow is a program of string quartet works entirely by Australian composers, with the exciting inclusion of two newly commissioned works by Brisbane-based composers Thomas Green and Rachel Merton. Pieces by Alice Chance, Elena Kats-Chernin, and Queenslanders Robert Davidson and Corrina Bonshek round out the program.

On Friday 23 August, the first concert is a relaxed performance event at Corinda Bowls Club, where Riverbend Ensemble will perform while a group of nine artists paint in response to the music. Jane Thompson will be the featured artist for this event. Audience members will be invited to walk around the artists during the event, and nourishment from a local food truck and the Bowls Club bar will be available.

On Saturday 24 August, the same program will be performed in a different display of art and music interaction. Graceville Uniting Church will be the venue for a concert accompanied by projections on screen of art by award-winning artist Kate Marek.
