What’s On: Idris Murphy exhibition, Reading The Other (Mitchell Fine Art)

Reading the Other

4 – 29 June 2024

Mitchell Fine Art, Fortitude Valley

Idris Murphy returns to Mitchell Fine Art with an exhibition of paintings that capture the essence of the Australian landscape.

A Sydney-based artist, Murphy has been at the forefront of Australian landscape painting for over four decades. His artwork is characterized by a deep engagement with the Australian environment, filtered through a unique blend of abstraction and figuration.

“There is incredible balance and harmony in his artwork that reveals itself more and more upon consideration of the image,” says Gallery Director Mike Mitchell.

Idris Murphy remains one of the countries most revered and influential artists, with his works held in the collections the National Gallery of Australia, the National Library of Australia, Parliament House Canberra, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. His impact on Australian art is significant and his work challenges viewers to see the landscape in new ways, not just as a physical space but as a site of spiritual and emotional resonance.

On Saturday 8 June from 1.30pm, Idris Murphy will hold an Artist Talk in the Gallery discussing his practice and the exhibition. An opening event will follow. All events are free and RSVP’s are not required.
