Camerata & Alex Raineri – Beethoven
17 February 2024
QPAC Concert Hall
Camerata – Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra is a two-time Helpmann Award nominated ensemble performing without a conductor. Camerata’s Artistic Associates and guest artists take ownership of their music-making to form a refreshing and acclaimed voice that empowers artists, inspires audiences, and enriches communities through music. Expanding to a 35-piece orchestra with Camerata’s winds, brass, and percussion sections, along with special guest pianist Alex Raineri for Beethoven’s famed Piano Concerto No. 1, audiences will be in for an exquisite evening of music with Camerata’s joyous flair.
The performance will open with Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture – one of the most thrilling and dramatic overtures in classical music. Audiences will be captivated by Beethoven’s ability to evoke Coriolan’s inner conflict between the 15th Century warrior’s determination to wage war on Rome and his mother’s protests from the sidelines.
Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, a symphonic poem lovingly composed as a birthday gift for his wife after the birth of their son Siegfried, begins gently, almost like waking on a soft, slow morning. Audiences will hear sweet birdsong, dreamy melodies, and heartfelt tenderness beautifully symbolising the intimacy and love between the couple.
Finally, Beethoven’s famed Piano Concerto No. 1 will be interpreted by acclaimed Brisbane-based pianist and Artistic Director of Brisbane Music Festival, Alex Raineri. This relatively early work exudes all the characters and flaws of this masterful composer, from the stereotyped messy, scowling genius to the tender, sensitive man who also had a penchant for playing practical jokes on his friends.
The concert will also feature the well-loved Wild Card Mystery Segment and, as always, Camerata welcomes audiences to join them in the foyer after the show to meet the musicians and have a chat.
Camerata & Alex Raineri: Beethoven will also be performed at Empire Theatres, Toowoomba, on 15 February 2024.
