What’s On: Reverie – music for clarinet and strings (Riverbend Ensemble)

Reverie – music for clarinet and strings

20 August, 2023

St David’s Anglican Church, Chelmer

Professional chamber music collective Riverbend Ensemble, led by Oxley resident and violinist Helen Carvolth, will present a concert of music for clarinet and strings at St David’s Anglican Church, including the world premiere of a new piece by Alys Rayner.

“When we played our first concerts after our formation last year, St. David’s was the most amazing venue,” said Carvolth. “Our reception was so positive and St. David’s is a beautiful place to play! We wanted to come back with new music and a world premiere.”

Reverie – music for clarinet and strings will include Mozart’s iconic Clarinet Quintet in A, Reverie Orientale by the Russian composer Alexander Glazunov, and string quartet music by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. There will also be the world premiere of Three Poems by Christopher Brennan, a work for spoken voice and clarinet quintet, by emerging composer Alys Rayner (who is also a violinist with the group).

Rayner is originally from Albury and studied composition at the Queensland Conservatorium with Gerardo Dirie and Gerard Brophy. Rayner was the 2020 Composer in Residence for the Australian Voices.

“This is one for poetry lovers as well,“ says Carvolth. “Alys has written this beautiful work especially for us, working with us during its development; and it celebrates the Australian poet Brennan, as well as Alys’ passion for language allied with music.”

The ensemble encourages young people to be a part of its audiences, making tickets free for children under fifteen, and tickets can be purchased at the door or online.
