Children of the Black Skirt
12 – 23 July 2023
Christ Church, Milton
The Australian bush. Five children stumble upon a ruined orphanage, crossing the threshold into a spirit world haunted by the lingering voices from times past.
This gothic fairytale recounts the dislocation of the Australian psyche, its unresolved tensions with its landscape, its bush panic and the stories of its lost children – abandoned, forgotten, stolen.
Children of the Black Skirt, written by Angela Betzien, has toured widely in Australian schools and theatres, blending education and reflecting our nation’s story while challenging our collective cultural memory.
This production will be directed by Helen Strube and designed by Bill Haycock, and will be performed in the Heritage-listed Christ Church in Milton.
