Picnic at Hanging Rock
11 – 20 August 2023
Studio1, Yeerongpilly
Observatory Theatre will present the iconic Australian mystery Picnic at Hanging Rock, adapted by Tom Wright after Joan Lindsay, at Studio1 in Yeerongpilly this August.
The company’s Founder and Creative Producer, Lachlan Driscoll, will be directing the adaptation. Based on Lindsay’s 1967 novel of the same name, Picnic at Hanging Rock has captivated and intrigued readers with the strange disappearance of three school girls and their teacher. Driscoll describes the play as “the classic Aussie tale, but not as you know it”.
“Lindsay has given us a playground of ideas to delve into”, says Driscoll, adding that Wright, the adaptor provides a “fascinating exploration into what this story means today, and how it has taken on a life of its own in our collective imagination”.
Melbourne-born playwright Tom Wright is best known for his play Black Diggers, which won the Nick Enright Prize for Playwriting in 2015. His adaptation of Joan Lindsay’s novel sets out to reveal “what really happened to the missing girls and their teacher on the infamous Hanging Rock”, says Driscoll. Observatory Theatre’s production will be performed by a five-piece female ensemble, shifting between multiple characters over 80 minutes in a Brechtian, contemporary retelling.
