‘Tis the season where everything sparkles! Check out these local creators of lovely jewellery:
If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know I’ve amassed quite a collection of beautiful Shibuya Moon creations! Designed and made in Brisbane by designer and illustrator Tiffany Atkin, Shibuya Moon pieces are “inspired by vintage costume jewellery and a little bit of magic”. They’re also super fun to wear, and even the big statement pieces are surprisingly comfortable and light. Keep an eye on her Instagram for the next restock date to be announced (and a new collection coming soon!).
I LOVE my Holy Woman signet ring from Silver and Cold! Kachiri is the founder and one-woman operation, based on the Gold Coast, a self-taught jeweller who makes every single piece by hand, from scratch, in her home studio from recycled sterling silver and solid gold. There is a ‘ready to ship’ section on her website if you’re looking to find a gift on a tight timeframe, and she also offers jewellery certificates.
I only discovered Fox and Cactus recently, and how has it taken me so long?! Artists/animators Emma and Tom run Fox and Cactus out of their home in Queensland, Australia, and exclusively design all the products. Their earrings and charms are fab, but they also have a HUGE range of washi tapes, stickers, notepads, and other stationery items.
A lot of Fox and Cactus work is inspired by pop culture – recent examples that spring to mind are The Mandalorian, Jurassic Park – and there are themes collections throughout the year. Their Christmas collection is a delight (I’ve already got myself some gorgeous Christmas light earrings!) and they also come in tree decoration form!
Michelle Pownell handstamps every piece of stainless steel jewellery and, paints every glass cabachon (glass dome) by hand for Allure Style. Handstamped necklaces, bracelets, earrings and other accessories can be personalised with family names or your favourite quotes. The Christmas order cutoff for Australian orders is December 7, so get in quick!
Slow made, small batch, handcrafted porcelain and gold earrings and ceramic homewares designed and made by Robyn Stewart in her solar-assisted studio on the Sunshine Coast. Pendants and gift certificates are also available.
Handmade in Brisbane from original, hand drawn illustrations by Therese, Busy Head designs have a uniquely Australian feel. Ever wanted to wear a democracy sausage on your ears, or a kangaroo in reindeer antlers to Christmas lunch? Busy Head has you covered. I personally adore her range of Australian native flower dangles, and have found the Christmas wreaths light and easy to wear. She also does custom pet portrait earrings!
A husband and wife team who create wire and enamel jewelry and wire wall hangings. All pieces are handcrafted in a studio in the Noosa Hinterland and the copper is cut by hand, so every piece is different. Heaps of sweet slogan earrings, their recent ‘Under The Sea’ collection, and I love their recent creations featuring animals from sausage dogs to The Kraken!
The Yippy Whippy jewellery (and apparel) range is all about fun, colour and unleashing your inner child! Everything is designed by Nicole in her studio in Brisbane, since 2016. You can order directly through the online store, or find Yippy Whippy in a number of Brisbane stockists.
Shannan is the designer and creator behind Birdee and Star, and her designs are bold and fun. I also like that she has a focus on sustainability, using eco-resin when she can and packaging in recycled and eco-friendly materials. Purchase from her online store or one of her Brisbane stockists.
Kate and Lee-Anne make Elka Pretties, and their Christmas collection is delightful! Online orders won’t be processed again until December 9, but you can find them at markets and at some Brisbane stockists – follow them on Instagram to see where they will be.
Serinda Jade creates jewellery from native flowers, encased in resin. Her earrings and pendants make the beauty of the bush wearable, and she does custom orders as well. Her Etsy store will be restocked before Christmas, so keep an eye on her Instagram for updates and to admire her creations!
129 La Trobe Tce, Paddington
Bursting with an eclectic range of jewellery, accessories, and homewares, Thousand Island Dressing is a great go-to gift spot. Their flagship store in Paddington feels part store, part art gallery – a great place to wander and to find something unique for a loved one (or yourself. Or both!). You can also shop online via the website.
